Dr. Korie Little Edwards has written numerous books. The award-winning book Smart Suits, Tattered Boots: Black Ministers Mobilizing the Black Church in the Twenty-First Century (with Michelle Oyakawa), draws on the case of Ohio black religious leaders’ voter mobilization efforts leading up to the 2012 election to explore when, how, and why black religious leaders engage in broad-based mobilization in the twenty-first-century United States. Four factors matter: the legacy of the civil rights movement, an emergence of faith-based community organizing over the past several decades, the black Protestant ethic, and contemporary racism. Each impacts modern-day black religious leader mobilization in important ways.
Based on data from the Religious Leadership and Diversity Project, Little Edwards' latest book, Estranged Pioneers: Race, Faith and Leadership in a Diverse World (with Rebecca Y. Kim), addresses how pastors of color navigate the oft-treacherous terrain of pastoral leadership in racially diverse religious organizations. Pastors of color are in many ways uniquely equipped to effectively head multiracial religious space in the United States. However, along the way, they must manage barriers that can curtail, impede or derail their leadership.
